The film opens with a high-speed pursuit. A crazed cop-killer named the escapes police custody and steals a pursuit vehicle. He easily outruns standard police officers until the Main Force Patrol's (MFP) top pursuit man, Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), joins the chase. In the famous final scene, Max finds the young gang member looting a crash site. Max handcuffs Johnny's ankle to a wrecked vehicle leaking gasoline and sets a slow-burning time delay fuse.
