The Skyline story began in under the Prince Motor Company , not Nissan. Originally marketed as a four-door luxury vehicle, the Prince Skyline featured a 1.5L engine and was intended for executives. The trajectory of the nameplate shifted in 1964 with the introduction of the Skyline GT (S54) , which featured a longer wheelbase to accommodate a larger six-cylinder engine, eventually taking second place in its class at the Japanese Grand Prix—losing only to a Porsche 904. Following the 1966 merger between Prince and Nissan, the model was officially rebranded as the Nissan Skyline.
