As the burden of caregiving and parenting becomes overwhelming for Matt, their long-time best friend (Jason Segel) offers to move in and help for a few weeks. Dane ends up staying for over a year, sacrificing his own job and personal life to provide emotional and practical support to the entire family until Nicole's final days. The film uses a non-linear structure, jumping through 13 years of their shared history to explore the deep bonds of their friendship.
